Where is Matsumoto City?
Nagano Prefecture is located in the center of Japan, in the heart of the
natural beauty and high mountains famous throughout the country.
The City of Matsumoto is on a plateau situated in the center of the
prefecture. Before the Meiji Restoration of 1867, the city flourished as a castle town.
Since then, it has gradually developed as an industrial and cultural center.
It is also a tourist city being rapidly modernized with the completion of the superhighway.
AIRPORT AND TRANSPORTATlON
International flights to Japan arrive at New Tokyo International
Airport (Narita), Kansai International Airport (Kanku)
and Chubu International Airport(Nagoya) on Honshu Island.
Although there are several other ways to reach Matsumoto.
we will show you the way from each of these airports bellow.
From New Tokyo International Airport (Narita)
Take the Narita Express "NEX", operated by Japan Railway (JR),
from the Airport to Shinjuku. You can choose the way to Matsumoto City.
<By JR limited express train>
The "Azusa" and "Super Azusa" limited express trains require about
2 to 3 hours for the journey from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto. The one-way fare is 6,200 Yen for non-reserved seats and about 6,700 Yen
for reserved seats. If you buy a book of Azusa coupon (6 of them)), the
price will be 4,500 yen each. There are one to two trains per hour.
<By JR local trains>
By local trains, the one-way journey from Shinjuku to Matsumoto along
the JR Chuo East Line takes about 5 to 7 hours, typically requires about three
transfers of trains and costs 3,610 yen.
With a Seishun 18 Kippu you could do the trip for as little as 2,300 Yen.
<By highway bus>
Alpico and Keio bus companies operate hourly between Keio Highway Bus
Terminal in Shinjuku and Matsumoto. The one-way trip takes about 3 hours
and 10 minutes and costs 3,400 yen. A round trip ticket costs only 5,950 yen,
but the return trip has to be done within seven days of the outward journey.

From Kansai International Airport (Kanku)
<By JR limited express train and Bullet train>
The "Haruka" limited express train requires about 1 hour for the journey
from the airport to Osaka station. Then take the “Shinkansen” the bullet
train requires 1 hour for the journey from the Osaka station to Nagoya station. Then the "Shinano" limited
express train requires about 2 hour for the journey from Nagoya station to
Matsumoto. The one-way fare is 13,120 Yen.
<By JR local trains>
By local trains, the one-way journey from Kansai Airport to Matsumoto along
the JR Line takes about 7 to 8 hours, typically requires more than four
transfers of trains and costs 7,040 Yen. With a Seishun 18 Kippu you could do the trip for as little as 2,300 Yen.
<By highway bus>
Once you get Osaka station, you can choice to use highway bus service.
Alpico and Hankyu bus companies operate twice between Hankyu Osaka Bus
Terminal in Osaka station and Matsumoto. The one-way trip takes about
5 hours and 30 minutes and costs 5,710 Yen. A round trip ticket costs only
10,100 Yen, but the return trip has to be done within ten days of the outward journey.

From Chubu International Airport (Nagoya)
<By Meitetsu train and JR limited express train>
The "Meitetsu" limited express train requires about 40 minutes for the
journey from the airport to Nagoya station. Then take the "Shinano"
limited express train requires about 2 hours for the journey from Nagoya
station to Matsumoto. The one-way fare is 6,150. There is one “Shinano” train per hour.
<By JR local trains>
By local trains, the one-way journey from the airport to Matsumoto along
the Meitetsu Airport line and JR Chuo West Line takes about 5 hours,
typically requires about five transfers of trains and costs 3,990 Yen. With a Seishun 18 Kippu
you could do the trip for as little as 2,300 Yen. (You need to buy a ticket
when you use the Meitetsu line).
<By highway bus>
Once you get Nagoya station, you can choice to use highway bus service.

Terminal in Nagoya station and Matsumoto. The one-way trip takes about
3 hours and 14 minutes and costs 3,460 yen. A round trip ticket costs only
5,000 Yen, but the return trip has to be done within four days of the outward journey.
